ECONOMIC RECOMMENDATIONS

ECONOMIC MODEL

We believe that trade between settlements will be necessary to fully utilize and share the resources that the Island provides in an equitable manner. The establishment of a currency will be imperative to achieve this aim. Failure to establish a currency will mean a reliance on a barter system which is problematic. This is particularly the case for those services and resources that need to be sourced offshore which require payment to be made in a timely and efficient manner. To ensure the Islands ongoing economic viablity post the establishment phase we propose to establish the following industries:

ORGANIC SKINCARE RANGE

Largely for export purposes, we propose a range of luxurious skincare products made entirely from natural botanicals found on the island. The presence of pawpaw, bananas, coconut and bees provides us with a unique blend of ingredients that will form the backbone of our range. Extensive research has also revealed that the fruit of candlenut trees produces an oil that has been used for hundreds of years throughout the tropics as a hair treatment. Flax which is in good supply can be used as an exfolient and hair strengthener containing omega 3 oils it adds shine and body to the hair. For further information on the many uses and properties of flax see http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/pqrl/docprintview/470382529/131. Our range will continually expand and change as we conduct further research into the many plants, trees and other organic resources available on the Island and we uncover their secrets.
As beeswax and honey is a natural preservative we would not need to necessarily import harmful chemical preservers to extend the shelf-life of our products. We have sourced a biodegradable packaging range to remain true to our environmentally friendly philosophy. Details can be found at http://www.bananapackaging.com
Jobs for the Island's inhabitants would be created in the manufacturing, harvesting, marketing and distribution phases of launching such a product.

LUXURY ECO-FRIENDLY RESORT

Already in Australia, a number of resorts are being built and maintained with a luxury environmentally low-impact ethos. EcoBeach Australia is a resort located just out of Broome in Western Australia. They operate a sustainable and environmentally friendly, luxury getaway for people who wish to holiday in a gorgeous yet responsible way. Located close to natural beaches and wilderness, the resort has little impact on its surrounds. There are no televisions which allows the patrons to fully appreciate the beauty of their surroundings. Each individual lodging has solar panels on the roof that supply the accommodation with power and the excess is then fed back into the resort grid for the running of the laundry, restaurant and other necessities. This makes it one of the few entirely self-sufficient resorts in the world.
This model is fantastic and we can envisage a very similar resort on our island. Luxury, boutique accommodation in the heart of a rainforest would attract a specific clientele who would help maintain the economic viability of our island.
Furthermore, the presence of a resort would provide jobs for citizens of The Island in many different capacities. Especially initially, to build the infrastructure that would be required.

CLEAN POWER

With geothermic possibilities, solar and wind power, our island could become quite the sustainable power generator! Ideally, if the power needs of the Island are being met by the sustainable harvesting of natural power then whatever is in excess could be traded offshore to other countries in exchange for goods. Often people in Australia, who have solar panels, find that the power they generate exceeds the power usage of their own homes. They then feed the excess power back into the grid and the government pays them for this power. We propose this on a larger scale, our Island is unlikely to be home to millions of people as it there is not enough space to house them adequately without decimating the Island entirely. Thus, by using various means of harvesting the power of the elements, our island can be both self-sufficient and able to trade with other nations without the necessity of building large scale industrial infrastructure to create export goods.
The Geothermal plant would require labour, as would the wind farms and solar panel upkeep. This provides the Island's inhabitants with the means and opportunity to have jobs and careers on the Island.

CURRENCY front/back back/front

Our money is colourful an expresses some of the wonders our Island has to offer - Bees to create our natural products, Pawpaw which has many amazing properties, windfarms that will power our sustainable life, fish who will feed our people and potentially be exported and finally the beauty of the rainforest. Our coins are uniquely shaped, breaking from the traditional circular shape. We will have the same coin values as the Australian currency - 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, $2 and $1. However, unlike the Australian $1 and $2 coins, our $2 will be bigger than the $1.
A currency allows us to be floated on the Global Market and means that we can trade with other nations. The value of our currency can be compared to their own and thus commerce can begin between nations. Obviously with the UN paying our bills initially we will not need our currency floated but internally on the island it will be necessary to establish trade between the settlements who may have advantages or resources not widely distributed.
